Soft Serve Ice Cream Machine Care Guide

How to Clean & Care for Your Soft Serve Ice Cream Machine

There's nothing quite like freshly made soft serve ice cream at home. But to keep every swirl tasting its best, regular cleaning and maintenance are essential. Whether you're making classic vanilla, experimenting with flavours or using a ready-made ice cream mix, looking after your Cooks Professional Soft Serve Ice Cream Machine helps prevent blockages, maintain hygiene and extend the appliance's lifespan.

Here's how to clean a soft serve ice cream machine properly, along with our top tips for keeping it in excellent condition.

How to Clean a Soft Serve Ice Cream Machine

Cleaning your soft serve ice cream maker after every use helps prevent leftover dairy, sugar and ice cream mix from building up inside the machine. The Cooks Professional Soft Serve Ice Cream Machine features an automatic cleaning programme, making everyday maintenance straightforward.

Step 1: Run the Automatic Cleaning Cycle
Once you've finished serving your ice cream, follow these steps:
1. Pour approximately 1 litre of clean water into the machine using the funnel.
2. Press the CLEAN button to activate the automatic cleaning programme, which runs for 10 minutes by default.
3. Once the cycle finishes, drain the water through the dispensing outlet.
4. Replace the water and repeat the cleaning cycle until it runs clear. The manual recommends five cycles in total.
- Use a suitable detergent as recommended in your appliance instructions for a more thorough clean, and gently brush the feed port to remove any remaining residue.

Step 2: Remove & Wash the Detachable Parts
Once the cleaning cycles are complete, switch off and unplug your ice cream machine. Loosen the four locking nuts to remove the front handle assembly, then carefully remove the mixing rotor blade.
Disassemble the removable handle components according to the instruction manual and wash them thoroughly in warm, soapy water. Pay particular attention to the dispensing outlet, sealing rings and any areas where ice cream residue can collect.
Wipe the inner barrel clean with a damp cloth. Never immerse the main appliance in water or allow liquid to enter its ventilation openings.

Step 3: Dry & Reassemble
Allow the mixing blade, handle components and inner barrel to dry completely before reassembling. Trapped moisture can cause unpleasant odours, so ensuring every component is thoroughly dry helps keep your soft serve ice cream maker fresh between uses.
Refit the mixing blade in the correct position, reinstall the handle assembly and tighten the locking nuts securely.

How to Prevent Blockages in Your Ice Cream Machine

One of the most important parts of soft serve ice cream machine maintenance is preventing the mixture from becoming too firm or blocking the dispensing outlet.
Avoid overfilling: Although the machine has a 1.5L capacity, start with no more than 700ml of ice cream mix to allow room for expansion during freezing. When making additional batches, add approximately 400ml at a time after dispensing.
Use suitable ingredients: Avoid coarse or granular ingredients that could obstruct the dispensing mechanism. Smooth, well-mixed ingredients help maintain consistent results.
Don't pre-freeze your mixture: The built-in compressor freezes the ingredients during operation. Adding frozen ingredients can cause the mixing blade to become blocked.
Avoid over-churning: If your ice cream becomes too firm, switch off the machine and allow it to melt and soften naturally. This usually takes around 30–45 minutes.
These simple steps help protect the motor, prevent unnecessary strain and maintain smooth dispensing.

Looking After Your Ice Cream Machine's Compressor

Your Cooks Professional Soft Serve Ice Cream Machine features a built-in compressor, meaning there's no need to pre-freeze the mixing bowl.

To help maintain its cooling performance:
- Allow proper ventilation: Keep at least 8cm of space around the machine to prevent overheating.
- Keep it level: Always operate the appliance on a flat, stable surface.
- Avoid frequent restarting: Leave at least five minutes between switching the machine off and back on.
- Keep away from heat: Avoid positioning the machine near ovens, hobs or other heat sources.
- Keep ventilation openings clear: Never cover the vents or allow water to enter them.

Following these maintenance tips helps protect the compressor and keep your ice cream machine performing efficiently.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you clean a soft serve ice cream machine?
You should thoroughly clean your Cooks Professional Soft Serve Ice Cream Machine after every use. This includes running the automatic cleaning programme and washing the removable components to prevent dairy residue and bacteria from accumulating.

Can you leave ice cream in a soft serve machine overnight?
For food safety, it's best to dispense any remaining ice cream and refrigerate or freeze it promptly in a suitable container, rather than leaving it inside the switched-off machine overnight. Clean the machine after use.

Why is my soft serve ice cream machine not dispensing?
The ice cream may have become too hard, the chamber may be overfilled or the dispensing outlet could be blocked. Switch off the machine and allow the mixture to soften naturally for approximately 30–45 minutes before checking for obstructions.

Can I put my soft serve ice cream machine parts in the dishwasher?
Unless your specific instruction manual confirms that a component is dishwasher safe, wash the detachable parts by hand using warm, soapy water. Never immerse the main machine or its electrical components.

Why is my soft serve ice cream machine making a scraping noise?
A scraping noise may indicate that the ice cream has become too firm against the inner barrel. Switch off the appliance and allow the mixture to soften before restarting.
